Hello there crafters! Cast your eyes over the loveliness that is the brand new Altenew Paint-A-Flower for February 2022 – it’s the Dahlia Bright Eyes!! Thank you to LauraJane for sending you my way (or start over at the Altenew Card Blog for the beginning of the hop).

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this bloom, I highly recommend a quick Google image search. That’s what I did ahead of deciding how to color the flowers, and wow, there are some gorgeous hues in those petals! I was inspired to try and paint true to the colors (which you know I don’t typically do) and was really pleased with how this turned out – using no-line watercoloring paired with my Altenew pan watercolors which have the perfect pinks and yellows.

I first stamped the image onto a panel of Altenew Watercolor cardstock using Vanilla Cream Crisp Dye Ink. This is a great ink for no line watercoloring – you can see it but it completely disappears when you watercolor it. I then mixed up my colors – I used a couple of shades of yellow with a touch of orange in one, and the hottest pink in the set. I then painted the petals, starting with the yellow up from the centre into middle of the petal. I then used the pink in from the end of the petal, fading out into the centre up to the yellow. I tried to avoid overlapping to keep the yellow bright yellow as much as possible – in a couple of places it did blend to orange.

I added some greens to the stems, and deeper orange to the centers. I also went around the entire panel with pale watered down blue, on which I added splatters and blended them slightly to appear as ‘drips’ (inspired by Erum’s amazing cards). When dry, I went around the outside again wiht a deeper blue, to create a ‘shadow’ as if the florals were lifting off the the page or die cut. I also added some Pure White ink splatters to add texture.

To add detail, I used my Hawaiian Shores Brush and Fine Tip Pens to add details in the petal veins, in the centres (drawing lots of little ovals) and along the stems.

When everything was dry, I stamped ‘Smile’ in Obsidian black ink onto the panel, and ‘you’re not alone’ on a strip of white cardstock which I trimmed out. I also added a little white gel pen onto the main letters for a bit of interest. And while it’s hard to seen in the picture, I also added a few dew drops onto the petals to finish.

  1. I love the sentiment of the card. I think we sometimes all feel alone. The flowers were vivid, and the water made me think of a quick sun shower in the spring. Brought back feelings of my childhood. Felt like a warm hug.

  2. Stunning card Jenni! Love the color combo and dimension! You did an amazing job showcasing the new PAF, thanks for the inspiration!

  3. This flower cried out for your color choices! The bright yellow and really hot pink inspire spring. I like that the colors come together in the middle of the petal without much overlap blending and the addition of the bright orange at the very center. The background is perfect– interesting without stealing the show from the flowers — I’m an Erum fan, too!!
thanks for sharing this lovely work!
