Hi Everyone!
Can you feel that chill in the air? Holiday card making season is officially here with the new Spellbinders October 2022 Club Kits resplendent with holiday wintery sentiments and christmas florals. I’ve gone for a green theme and have a couple of fun techniques to share that can give you more bang for your buck when using your embossing folders and Glimmer hot foil plates.
I’m featuring the Small Die, Embossing Folder and Glimmer of the Month kits for October 2022 in these cards. You can find out more about these clubs and how to sign up to be sure to receive the new kits as they are released here.
My first card features the Embossing Folder of the Month “Scattered Christmas”. I dry embossed a panel of Blue Spruce cardstock then added lots of splatters with gold metallic ink spray, a green metallic ink spray and a white ink spray to create this fun almost starry sky over the top of the embossed panel.
While it was drying, I glimmered the main floral image from the Glimmer of the Month ‘Poinsettia Spray’ onto a piece of Peridot cardstock. I used the gorgeous green holographic Glimmer Hot Foil – it is included in the 4 pack Shimmer Holiday set and looks stunning against the Peridot, then die cut it out. For a little drama, I ink blended a couple of shades of darker green ink around the edges, fading out into the center.
I adhered the foiled floral onto my splattered panel, trimming it in two places for a different look. The sentiment was hot foiled in Matte Gold onto Rainforest cardstock, die cut out and mounted it onto my card with foam squares. I finished with a few Fashion Gold embellishments.
For my second card, I used a panel of Lagoon cardstock, and dry embossed the main Glimmer hot foil plate onto the panel to one side – you can use a simple embossing sandwich (base, plate, cardstock, embossing mat, embossing plate) and I highly recommend spritzing the cardstock panel a couple of times with water to avoid it ripping. You can use either side on your card front – both look great.
I ink blended some deeper blue-green ink around the edges, as well as a hint of black ink for depth, then added lots of splatters as I did before with the same ink sprays.
My sentiment is from the Small Die of the Month set, “Outlined Christmas Sentiments” – I die cut several from Brushed Gold cardstock and adhered them to a base of white cardstock. I could then play around with sentiment placement and select those that worked best. I finished with some Fashion Gold embellishments.
My final card features the Embossing Folder of the Month again, but this time I only selectively embossed it. I got this look by replacing the die cutting plate with the Solid Oval Essential Glimmer Hot Foil Plate, placing it behind the embossing folder containing my Rainforest cardstock (making sure it was centred behind the cardstock). I then added a slim plate on top (I used the plastic shim from my Glimmer system and a folded piece of cardstock). This selectively embossed the christmas folder pattern only where the Solid Oval pressed it.
To highlight it further, I ran a large blending tool with green ink over the top of the dry embossing, and then in a few places added darker ink. I then added a few splatters using the same sprays as before. I completed the card with a sentiment I had hot foiled onto Peridot cardstock using Matte Gold Glimmer hot foil and die cut out. To finish, I added Fashion Gold embellishments to tie all of my cards together.
I love how you can selectively emboss using glimmer plates! What other shapes doe you have that you can try this with? And let’s not forget the dry embossing of the detailed hot foil plates themselves – two very different techniques as well as the usual Glimmering approach!
Have fun!
