Hi there everyone! I hope your day has gotten off to a good start, and that we can make it a little bit brighter today with our inspiration blog hop for Altenew’s new Spring Garden release. This new release has all sorts including new Hot Foil plates – wooo! You should have been sent my way from Mindy Eggen‘s blog. Or, you can head on over to the start of the hop on the Altenew Blog. I have a bunch of projects to share today, with lots of hot foiling!
For my first project, I’m definitely in keeping with the Springtime vibe. I’ve never tried pencil coloring a hot foiled image below, and I thought the Morning Blooms plate would be perfect. It also comes with a co-ordinating coloring stencil which I could use to lay down a base color of ink first, before using my pencils.
I first hot foiled the plate using my hot foiling machine (I use Spellbinders Glimmer System) using Matte Silver Glimmer hot foil. I then used the Morning Blooms Simple Coloring Stencil and laid down some ink in yellows, pinks and greens, (and gray for the bird). I kept it very light as I was coming in with the pencils to add more depth.
I used Altenew’s Woodless Coloring Pencils, and used two or three shades on each of the images, trying not to overlap the foil (although it wasn’t a problem if i did go onto it). I didn’t cover up all the ink blending, and just added shadows with the pencils.
When complete, I stamped the ‘missing you’ sentiment in Obsidian Pigment ink (from the Castle Garden stamp set), and added a few Antique Silver Metallic Ink Spray splatters, as well as a few clear confetti sequins to finish.
My next card features the Lacy Doily Die – this is a super intricate die and I wanted to dry emboss it – something I love doing with detailed dies (it also saves you a lot of time popping out the pieces!). I trimmed a panel of Gold Mirror cardstock to A2 size, and ran it through my die cutting machine, with die face up, then the cardstock, then a tan mat, then an embossing plate. I had secured the die in place with thins trips of Satin Masking Tape to make sure it was lined up where I wanted it.
For my sentiment, I heat embossed the ‘Congratulations’ from the Castle Garden set in Antique Gold on white and trimmed out the strip, adhering it under the dry embossed doily with a strip of foam tape. I embellished the doily with matte gold gems to finish.
My next two cards feature the Chevron Background Hot Foil plate. This is such a fabulous versatile background – I think these go with everything and you can make them as bold or as neutral as you like. For my first, I hot foiled the plate in Black Glimmer Hot Foil onto Jet Black Cardstock for a tone on tone look. I trimmed it down on the long sides and adhered to a white notecard.
The die is from the new collection and is called ‘Antique Blossoms’. I die cut it twice, once from super hot pink cardstock from my stash, and once from Gold Mirror cardstock, then adhered them together, leaving them a little bit offset so the gold peeped through. I adhered it directly over the Chevron panel and trimmed off the excess on the sides.
I used a paintbrush to create splatters using the Antique Gold Ink Spray. The sentiment (from Castle Garden) was stamped in Obsidian Pigment ink and I sprinkled it with Translucent Pearl embossing powder and heated it, to give a little shimmer. I finished with a few Antique Gold Sequins.
My final card shows that you can overlay hot foiling. I first hot foiled the Chevron Plate in Black Glimmer hot foil on Glossy Black cardstock. I then overlaid it with the Morning Blooms plate and hot foiled again using Matte Gold. Isn’t that cool?
I added a simple ‘Hello’ sentiment cut from Gold Mirror and Vellum, and overlaid on a messy next of gold thread before adhering with foam tape. I also scattered a few black crystals here and there to finish.
