Hi Folks! I’m back today with a card for my Altenew Educator Certification based on the Easy Die Cutting Techniques class. This was one of my favorite classes so far – I love using dies in new and different ways. One of the lessons features dry embossing – using your dies with an embossing mat to impress the die pattern into the paper rather than cut it. That’s what I focused on with my card today.

To create my card, I wanted to do stamping as I normally would, and then when done, dry emboss over the top, as Yana did in one of the lessons – such a fab idea and yet I don’t think I’ve ever done it. I decided to go all in and no-line watercolored the main image from Blooming Bouquet.

I stamped the image in Rose Quartz ink (a pale pink) onto Arches cold press watercolor card stock (thicker cardstock per the class works better for dry embossing so I figured I’d go with the good stuff!). I then did no line watercoloring with the Tropical Fiesta watercolor brush markers. My approach was to add the lines in the darkest areas (or in some cases go all the way around) by. putting the brush direct to the paper, then pull it out with some water on a brush. I did this on all of the images in the bouquet. I also added a little Copic marker in a co-ordinating color as the watercolor had gotten a little bit ‘blurry’ by then’. I added some .01 Copic multi-liners to the corners. I also added a few splatters for good measure.

It was then time to do my dry embossing. I used the Ornate Cover plate die to cover the entire piece, then ran it through my machine with an embossing mat (AND held my. breath! ) You can see how it turned out in the close up. above – does it look fab!? I just loved this die for the detailed image too – it almost adds shading and dimension to the coloring – particularly on the leaves. I love how this worked out!

To finish, I trimmed the card down and popped it onto a 110lb card base. My sentiment is Thanks die cut twice from white cardstock and once from matte gold cardstock using the Signature Words die set. I adhered them altogether.

Hope you like it!

Jenny

  1. This is soooo beautiful! What an amazing effect! I can see why you were nervous after the time it must have taken to paint the flowers. I really love it and will try with my not so complicated coloring.
