Do you ever get your kids in your craft space to make cards with you? I’ve been doing it more and more as my daughter Ruby has gotten a little older (she’s 4), and I’ve loved to craft with her cousins and brother who are a little older. I’m over on The Hedgehog Hollow Blog today with tips on crafting with kids – with a little help from Ruby!
When she saw the stamps from the November Hedgehog Hollow Subscription Box she was so excited and really wanted to use them to make her friends some cards – so that’s exactly what we did!
We decided to film it and I have included some tips of mine for helping things go a little more smoothly when you craft with kids, especially the younger ones (Ruby turned 4 in October 2019). You can check out the video here or on my YouTube.
If there were two tools I’d say are super helpful when crafting with kids, especially when painting, it’s a stamp positioning tool like a MISTI, and a waterbrush. The first helps kids to arrange the stamps how they like much more easily, especially with little fingers, as well as get a good stamped impression. The second one is great for avoiding water spills!
I also recommend changing things up a bit more than you would normally to keep them interested. As an example, in the cards we made, we used lots of different colors to stamp the images, rather than just standard black. She got to delve into my ink collection and choose her own colors – super fun!
The stamps in this month’s kit are great for introducing kids to cardmaking. They’re small, and great for scene building – kids can give their imaginations a workout and create so many different pictures!
We used my Mijello Mission Gold watercolors, and as a finishing touch, used WOW! Sparkles glitter to create stickers with little mess – and with that extra bit of bling that 4 year old girls love.
I left a few of the more amusing moments in the video too – I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it. I think she did great, what do you think?
