It’s hop time for the Altenew February 2020 release and for those of you who love painting you’re going to LOVE this one – there are new watercolors! Yippee! And a craft mat! Woohoo!

All of the stops on the hop are listed at the end of this post, as well as details on prizes up for grabs. Go show these wonderful talented folks some love and get inspired! I’m excited to be joining as a guest for this release and I’ve had so much fun, I have a bunch of cards to share – and a VIDEO! The hop starts over on the Altenew blog. But first, here’s a look at the new release (affiliate links):

Superb right! I’m so excited in particular about the craft mat and the watercolors. The craft mat is a perfect size, inches on one side, cm on the other, light and dark. It’s really sturdy, and has two card sizes in the centre for perfect alignment!

My first card uses the brand new Artists’ Watercolors and the new Exotic Garden stamp set. These watercolors are gorgeous! They are a set of 24 half pan colors, and they complement the previous watercolor release. The new container is metal and each of the pans are individually wrapped. You definitely need these. Here’s a look at the colors included in case you want to compare to the other pan set:

You can check out the video here where I create the card on YouTube, and I give you a closer look at the new paints:

I heat embossed the Exotic Garden onto hot press watercolor cardstock (smoother cardstock is better for heat embossing) and then dropped the colors into the wells, pulling out with a little water. When the first layer was dry, I went back in and used a fine brush to add some details. I wanted to keep the colors really pale, and create an almost ethereal look to the image against the embossing powder.

I added some small splatters with dark brown to add a little more interest to the background then trimmed down the panel to A2. Using my MISTI (as i didn’t want to mess up the stamping) I stamped the sentiment from the Ornamental Bliss set directly onto the panel. I used Altenew Milk Chocolate crisp dye ink to tie in with the splatters and for a softer look than black that I felt would have been a little harsh against the soft colors. As a finishing touch I added some clear Dew Drop embellishments in different sizes and mounted on a panel.

My next card shows you another way to use the Exotic Garden stamp, but this time without watercoloring. It only uses two ink colors: Altenew Fresh Lemon in the centre and Pinkalicious at the edges.

To create the card, I heat embossed the Exotic Garden set onto Bristol cardstock in gold embossing powder, then die cut it with the co-ordinating die. Using a blender tool, I blended Fresh Lemon from the centre of the image outwards. I then blended Pinkalicious from the edges and fading in towards the centre, allowing it to overlap gently with the Fresh Lemon – you can see that gorgeous orangey color you get where they blend together.

I mounted the die cut on foam tape onto an A2 panel of wood grain patterned paper from the Essential Rock Collection pad. The sentiment (from Ornamental Bliss) was ombre stamped using the same two inks directly onto the panel, and then the sub-sentiment is from the Warm Hugs stamp set stamped in black pigment ink. A few clear sequins finished off the card.

I loved that color combo so much I used it again here with the New Beginnings set from the new release. I created an ink blended panel using Bristol cardstock again, and blending Fresh Lemon up from the bottom, Pinkalicious from the top, and letting them overlap to create that lovely warm orange again. I then die cut the panel with the Dotted Swirls Debossing Cover die. I also splattered the panel with Altenew Antique Gold spray, and some of the black ink to add interest, then set aside.

To act as a frame for my images, I adhered a couple of the Fine Frames die cut from Jet Black cardstock to the centre of the panel. I then stamped the florals from New Beginnings, and rather than color them, left them as black and white. The background is so bright, I thought this would pair perfectly. I die cut them out with the co-ordinating dies and popped them on foam tape into the centre of my card. The sentiment is heat embossed in white on Jet Black cardstock and also comes from the New Beginnings set. I couldn’t resist adding a few co-ordinating sequins to finish.

My final card for today’s hop stop features the Ornamental Bliss stamp set. This is a beautifully intricate layering set that allows you to ‘color in’ the shapes in the scrollwork by stamping over the top. There are five layers so you have so many options on color combos, and you can use the outline image on its own, color in with other mediums, or even stamp the pattern without the outline.

I decided to stamp the image in black ink, and then fill it in with peacock colors. I used Moonrock cardstock for a more vintage feel. I used Altenew crisp inks in Razzleberry, Emerald, Ultraviolet, and Starlight. For glamour, I added the final layer with embossing ink and heat embossed in gold. I also added a few Nuvo Glossy White drops for interest. The sentiment was added with the same black ink.
