Altenew is releasing its new Paint-A-Flower today and this month it features Sunflowers! Even more exciting, they are also releasing a brand new Woodless Watercolor Pencils set :o. I’m part of a blog hop today showcasing the release. You should have arrived here from Nathalie’s blog. The full list of stops on the hop are later in this post… and of course, it wouldn’t be an Altenew hop without a giveaway! Stay tuned!

The new Paint-A-Flower is gorgeous as always, featuring a small bunch of sunflowers, and some uplifting mix and match sentiments.

This is the card I created today – it features no line coloring using the brand new Woodless Watercolor Pencils. I love new mediums to paint and color in with – these are really great to use, and not something I’ve really tried before. I used them direct to paper, and pulled the color out with water. Here’s a more detailed look at the colors in the set.

As you can see, there’s no pencil ‘lead’ surrounded by wood, they’re all color – they’re super smooth to hold and use. They come in a handy little tube and because they’re sharp points, you can get into small spaces with different colors quite easily.

Please note Altenew is expecting these to be out of stock very shortly after release. They’re encouraging everyone who wasn’t able to get a set to sign up for a back in stock notification email on the product page so that you’ll be notified once they’re back in stock – expected to be around 11/11/2020.

I stamped the bunch of sunflowers twice on a panel of hot press watercolor cardstock using the pencils. themselves! I simply mounted the stamp onto my MISTI, scribbled the colors onto the stamp, spritzed with water, and then stamped! Perfect for no-line watercolor. I used the dark yellow on the petals, brown on the centres and a green on the leaves.

I then colored them in using the pencils by adding the color in the image in areas, then pulling. it out with a damp paint brush. Once dry, I layered different colors over the top to build up contrast and shadow. It’s a little experiemental but I really love how it turned out.

You’ll notice the shadowy sunflowers in the background – they are stamped in Butternut ink (roughly wiping off overlapping elements from the stamp with my fineger to avoid overstamping the colored images).

I stamped this sentiment from the set in Obsidian Black ink directly onto the panel – I actually sing this song to my daughter, it’s the first ‘real’ song I taught her so super happy it was in the set! I then dry embossed the entire panel with the Beautiful Bergenia embossing folder. This is always a little ‘hold your breath’ when I try it – but it really does look cool and adds a lot. of texture and dimension to the image without overpowering it!

  9. Thank you for sharing your card! I love that you haven’t tried to use these pencils before and still made the flowers lovely and the background soft. The embossing folder is hard to see in the pictures, but I wouldn’t have thought to bring texture to a card with painting and outline stamping, but it’s a great idea and I’ll be experimenting with it AND the woodless pencils!
